Brush 85
Brush 85 is a 1967 Kaiser Jeep M-715 Series 5/4 ton Truck. It meets NFPA 1906 Wildland Fire Apparatus Standards, Maryland Forest Service (DNR) specifications and the equipment needs for our response area. Brush 85 responds first-out for first due and mutual aid brush/woods/wildland fire assignments. The unit also responds first-out for “smoke investigations” and “wires down” assignments. The unit has been changed to meet our needs since it was purchased through the Maryland Forest Service (DNR) for $1 in 1976. When first put in-service, the tank was 100 gallons and it had a front-mount PTO pump with 2 cab seats and a crew seating area in the truck bed for up to 6 personnel. The first upgrade was a 250 gallon (fuel type) tank and a trash pump. Then, a custom built steel 300 gallon tank was placed on the truck. Both of those upgrades maintained the same pump and manual hose reel. A "C.E.T. Pumps" slide-in tank/pump system replaced the steel tank and trash pump which was also altered several times for ease of operation. The original 24V electrical system was converted to a 12V system when the slide-in system was installed.
The last "in-house" refurbishment was completed by our members in 2011. Using the original slide-in tanks, a new 'Darley' pump was installed along with new "plumbing". Other installations included: a new emergency beacon, a new electric 'Hannay' booster hose reel, repairs to the front extended bumper, dent/paint touch-ups and an electrical wiring upgrade were completed during the refurbishment.
There are no plans to replace the unit anytime soon, since it has provided us with many years of faithful service. It is also one of the few units in the “region” that is truly an “Off-Road” Brush/Woods/Wildland Unit and has been special called on many occasions for this reason. The unit is especially good at "running over" trees up to 3 1/2" in diameter and handles rough terrain with ease. No roads or even trails are needed for this unit to operate!
