3rd Annual Carroll County Heavy Vehicle Rescue Course
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Lieutenant 8-2 Christopher Harris
September 23, 2011

In most area's, it is unusual for a heavy vehicle rescue incident to occur in your first due, but when a heavy vehicle rescue incident does occur, you and your rescue crew should be ready for the worst. Are you and your crew prepared to handle a Cement Mixer on top of a car? This is the premise for a Heavy Vehicle Rescue Course.

The Union Bridge Fire Company will be hosting the 3rd Annual Carroll County Heavy Vehicle Rescue Course on October 14th, 15th and 16th of 2011. As with the previous years, four complex heavy rescue scenarios will be set-up to challenge even seasoned rescue personnel. This hands-on training is a must for rescue squad officers and crews. Teams will have the opportunity to solve scenarios by trial and error, as well as ideas given by the instructors, preparing you for the real-life incidents where time is of the essence. Even if you've taken the course before, refreshing yourself is always a good idea.

Some of the pictures accompanying this story show scenarios that the instructors have actually dealt with on real emergencies. Do you have the knowledge to quickly rescue a victim in this situation.

Listen to what some of the participants from previous years have said......

"This is by far, the best rescue training I have ever received.".... Carroll County, MD
"The scenarios were very challenging and very realistic. What an awesome experience"...Frederick County, MD
"This course should be mandatory for all rescue squad officers, it will be for mine."....Washington County, MD

The details:

1. Approximately 24 hours of Heavy Vehicle Rescue instruction.
2. Classroom - Slideshow presentation covering advanced vehicle rescue topics such as:
- Design and capacities of wood cribbing and shoring systems
- Basic and advanced stabilization systems
- Physics of vehicle stabilization, lifting and moving
- Heavy truck information including load/weight estimation
- Winch and heavy rigging equipment physics and principles
- Technical topics and information and much, much more!!!
3. Practical - Four(4) complex and challenging stabilization/extrication scenarios.

Instruction will be provided by "Mid-Atlantic Technical Rescue". The Union Bridge Fire Company will be covering the majority of the expense, however, we are requiring a nominal fee of $100 per student, which includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday (this is significantly less than the typical cost per student).

Each student is required to bring your own personal protective equipment including helmet, turn-out coat, turn-out pants, gloves, steel toe/shank boots and eye protection. Rescue suits (NFPA) are acceptable in lieu of turn-outs. Without this equipment, students will not be able to participate in practical scenarios.

Class/Practical hours - Friday: 1830 - 2200. Saturday/Sunday: 0700 - 1700. Classroom and Practical Evolutions will all be held at the Lehigh Portland Cement Company.

Any fire/rescue personnel or company's, can register and reserve your spot by contacting Chief Chad Green at (443) 340-9422 or email at greenchief@aol.com

For additional information, contact Chief Chad Green at the above listed contacts or Mid-Atlantic Technical Rescue at (240) 674-2886 or email at MidAtlanticTechnicalRescue@gmail.com
