Large Mulch Pile Fire in Frederick County
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Captain Christopher Harris
November 22, 2016

Frederick Co. Box 17-41. At 0047 hrs., Carroll County Stations 8, 10, 14, 1 and Tower 12 were dispatched to assist Frederick County for a house fire near Liberty Road and Unionville Road. There are 2 intersections with this cross street (east and west), that are about 2 miles apart, so units responded to each end to locate the correct location. FC Chief 17-2 quickly found the location to be closer to the western intersection, and upon further investigation, located the fire to be at 8520 Woodville Road, the site of a lumber yard operation.

The fires location was back a long lane and as Chief 17-2 arrived, he found several mulch piles on fire. The mulch piles covered an area initially estimated to be about 30’ x 100’. After establishing command, units were instructed to lay supply line from the entrance to the property, a lay of nearly 2000’.

Units began attacking the fire while a tanker shuttle was established. Additional “Brush” units were also dispatched to the incident. Tower 12 set-up an elevated master stream and units operated for nearly 6 hours before clearing the incident. Nearly 100,000 gallons of water was used.

No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation.

Units: E/T84, B-85 (Union Bridge), FC 17 (Libertytown), Station 10 (New Windsor), Station 14 (Winfield), Station 1 (Mount Airy), TW12 (Sykesville), FC 9 (New Midway), FC Ta1 (Independant Hose)

Station 8 units returned to quarters at around 0700 hrs.
